Yes! Our course is approved by the Virginia DMV and meets all requirements for both point and fine reduction as well as insurance discounts and earning safe driving points.

You will receive notice in the mail from the DMV requiring you to complete a driver improvement course. If you are being ordered by the court, you will receive a referral at your court date.

If you want to reduce points or fines associated with your ticket by taking a defensive driving course, you can contact the court that issued your ticket before your court date to request permission to do so. To take an online course, you must meet the following requirements:

  • You must hold a valid non-commercial Virginia driver’s license.
  • You have been cited for a minor moving violation.
  • You do not have any outstanding violations on your record, and your license has not been suspended or revoked.
  • You are aged 20 years or older.

If you still are unsure as to whether or not you qualify for defensive driving, contact your court and request more information relating to your particular situation.

If you are taking the course as part of a court order or for ticket dismissal/fine reduction, there is no limit. For point reduction or to receive 5 safe driving points, you can take the course once every 24 months.

The state of Virginia requires you to spend a minimum of 8 hours on the driver improvement course. Each section has a timer on it, and it will not allow you to move forward to the next section until the time runs out. You can log in and out as much as you’d like, and your progress is saved as you go, so you do not need to complete it all at once.

You have an unlimited number of chances to retake your final exam, so if you fail the first time, don’t panic. You can take it again, but you must wait until the following calendar day to make another attempt.

No. The course is required by the state of Virginia to be 8 hours in length. We understand that some people may read faster than the timer allows you to go, but state regulations prohibit us from disabling the timer.

The DMV requires us to use a specific template for sending the certificate. It needs to be downloaded on a computer to access the useable version. It will not open on a phone or tablet.

With the PDF open, click the down arrow in the top right corner of the screen to download the PDF. When the file downloads, options will be provided on where the PDF should be opened. Click "Show in Folder"

When the folder opens, locate the downloaded file. The icon associated with the PDF shows the browser with which the file is saved. If the PDF is saved with Adobe (red and white icon), click the name of the PDF to open the certificate of completion.

If the PDF is not saved with Adobe (may show internet browser icon), right click the PDF file and choose “Open with” and select “Adobe Acrobat Reader.” When opened in Adobe, your certificate will show your name and completion information.

Once your completion has been submitted to the DMV, you will receive an email with two attachments – one is your certificate ("Please wait..." file), and the second is the DMV provided instructions on downloading Adobe and your certificate along with an example certificate with the name "Jane Doe." This is not your certificate.

We are required by the DMV to email your certificate using the state provided template. If you are having difficulty downloading the certificate, please call our office to request a copy by mail.
